October 15th, 2009 Posted 5:06 am
Beautiful dough figurines, an enchanting Chinese folk art, are one of the those things that you will fall in love with at the first sight, literally. On the streets of many Chinese cities, vendors can be seen selling exquisite dough figurines which usually draws a big crowd. Originally a folk art with a long history of over 1,300 years, dough figurines are now being made by skillful, experienced professional artists. Find a personal shopping assistant to go on a personal tour in Beijing to buy unique, elegant dough figurines in some of the most special local shops.
Usually made of wheat flour or glutinous rice, Chinese dough figurines are characterized by their incredibly small sizes, lifelike features, and beautiful, vivid expressions. The soft and pliable nature of dough enables artists to give any shape and form to the details on a work. Compared to figurines made of hard materials like porcelain or metal, figurines made of dough, with their smooth, warm appearances, are especially good at bringing out the “human” aspect of art.
The origin of Chinese dough figurine is unknown. Works unearthed in archaeoligcal sites indicates that the dough figurines were made as early as the Tang dynasty, about 1,300 years ago. In the Song dynasty, it became a popular practice for people to create dough figurines for festivals.
Cultural Note: A legend says Chinese dough figurines were invented by Zhuge Kongming, a famous military leader from the Three Kingdoms period. Zhuge once wanted lead his army across the Lu River to engage the enemies at the other side, but they were stopped by the horrible waves caused by strong wind. One of Zhuge’s advisors recommended the sacrifice of 49 human heads to pay tribute to the god who controled the river, but Zhuge, feeling the loss of life unworthy, used 49 heads made of dough instead. This tactic was successful, and the tradtion of making dough heads was passed down through generations.
The status of dough figurines being a folk art was elevated to a formal art during the Ming and Qing dynasty, when serious artists from many places in China specialized in making and selling dough figurines. The most famous artists from this period include Wang Qingyuan and Guo Xiangyun from Shandong province, who made “Heze” style figurines, and “Dough Figurine Zhang” from Tianjin city, whose skills were lost in his late years.
Traditionally, dough figurines are used by Chinese in four different ways: as decoration, as food, as offering to gods or ancestors, and as gifts for famlily and friends on festivals.
Decoration: Dough figurines make for great decoration. A fine dough figurine, though small, has qualities other artwork don’t usually have: it can resist decay, and won’t easily change shape and fade. Exquisite works made by creative artists have unique, beautiful designs that are regardedly highly by art lovers.
Food: In some regions of China, especially Shanxi province, people make auspicious dough figurines to celebrate important events and eat them as food.
Offerings: Some people believe the art of dough figurine developed from the ancient tradtion of using figurines as offerings to gods and ancestors. Antiques unearthed from burial sites seem to support this hypothesis. This tradition is still practiced by modern Chinese.
Gifts: People in many places of China have an old tradition of giving dough figurines to family members and friends on festivals and important events. Oversea visitors to China are often surprised to see exquisite dough figurines in the local shops, and like to buy them as gift.
There are three major styles of dough figurines produced in different places in China: Heze dough figurine, Xinzhou dough figurines, and Xiangzhou dough figurines.
In Beijing, there are many amazing local shops with dough figurines made by some of the best artists in China. When you go shop for these products, go on a Beijing China tour to find out!

Work Of Christmas Tree Light Wars
October 11th, 2009 Posted 5:09 pm
Have you ever driven down a street only to find that every house on the block is elaborately decorated with countless Christmas tree lights and other decorations? This is a common theme around Christmas time. Some people refer to them as Christmas tree light wars. This is when neighbors try to outdo each other as far as Christmas decorations are concerned. No one will be in. They will put up thousands of Christmas tree lights, some will put up nativity scenes, some will put up figures of Santa with his reindeer and some will have all of the above. Some yards are so full of decorations that their entire yard is full. You can experience the great look while going from your car. But there are behind the scenes aspects to the Christmas tree light wars that most people wouldn’t think of unless they were involved in the war personally. Let’s take a look at the ups and downsides of the Christmas tree light wars and we’ll probably find that we’re glad we don’t live on one of those streets.
Why Christmas Tree Light?
First you have to consider the why question when it comes to the Christmas tree light wars. A large number of area distributes prize to the person whose has well arranged the yard and so that is what oftenly fuels the first shot in the game. However, some neighbors just decide to go all out and then the neighbors will get competitive and will follow suit. This continues until it gets ridiculous. Some neighbors have even become so competitive that they steal decorations out of their neighbors’ yards so that they can have bragging rights. And for most that’s all the Christmas tree light wars are about; it’s about the right to brag that you have the most decorated yard.
Cost Of Christmas Tree Light
Most don’t consider the cost as far as the Christmas tree light wars go. First of all, Christmas decorations are not cheap. They cost a lot of money, especially when you consider just how many Christmas decorations it takes to fill up an entire yard. But then there’s the electricity cost. Think of how much it costs to not only run the household but all those lights and figurines that move and make music and sing; it can get very, very expensive. And what do they get for all that money? Bragging rights? It hardly seems like a fair trade.
The Upside To Christmas Tree Light?
So is there an upside to the Christmas tree light wars? Well, there are all those cars that drive by to see the spectacle. The wars definitely entertain those that aren’t involved. But what else do these wars do? The chimes ,noise and lights from the windows create discomfort for the neighbors to sleep most of the time. Wait, that’s not an upside. Maybe there isn’t an upside. Maybe it’s just a practice borne out of excess and pride. Well, if nothing else, the scene would make a good Christmas card picture. Now doesn’t that make you want to get started decorating your yard? That’s what I thought.

Improve Your Windows With Custom Blinds
September 15th, 2009 Posted 12:37 pm
In the mini blind market, you have three types of options: You can buy what is ready-made and is widely available in retail stores; buy ready-made but cut to fit blinds; and one-inch slat mini blinds that can fit one-eighth of an inch near your required specifications.
First option lets you find the blinds that can fit to the general size of the windows you have. These have low price and are made in big numbers. As for the cut-to-fit blind, you can find these blinds in home improvement stores. You can also find stores that are ready to cut the blinds for you at their store.
The custom-made mini blinds come with a lifetime warranty and are made with superior components. Because a lot of manufacturers make custom window shades, you will find all the range of colors. In case you decide for mini blinds, you will spend more money at the start, but will save cash in the long run.
You can also choose from two styles of lifting systems to raise your wood window coverings — standard lift and tilt features — and optional cordless systems that combine shade control while enhancing safety for children by eliminating dangling cords.
You can also select the route-less option that conceals the route holes through which the control cords run; or cloth tapes that not only cover route holes but can also add the finishing touch to your wood window’s decor. It reduces glare and you get to control the amount of light. A good option are sun blocking window blinds or blackout blinds if you wish to stop the sunlight completely.
Horizontal blinds may be the right solution for you if you like the look of a wood. For a refined, warm look, horizontal wood blinds are a handsome solution for any room. These 2 inch wood blinds can be found in wood stains or paints and are great for blend in or be the focal point in the room. USe these for insulation and light blockage, and be aware that they are very easily maintained, when compared to all otehr window coverings out there.

Epoxy Concrete Paint – Use It Properly
August 25th, 2009 Posted 12:09 pm
The usual target for epoxy paints are basements and garages, since they take heavy traffic and need a paint that can endure it well. Good results can be made on concrete slabs, kennels, interior floors, wooden car trailers, brick pavers, shop floor, laundry room floors and pole barns. This coating can endure dirt, grease, water, oil and many other chemicals that would usually destroy other paint types in no time. Tough resins that are mixed during the application are responsible for this. Since they have such great price to value ratio, they are the best floor coating solution.
Epoxy floor paints come in three types. First, hundred percent solids do not contain solvents that evaporate. Second, solvent based epoxies adhere and penetrate well but they are hazardous to health and need that you ventilate your garage or basement well during application to avoid breathing the fumes that emanate from them. Finally, third type of paint is water bases and it does not have hazrdous fumes, is cheaper, a lot thinner with anti-slip texture. But, a lot of ventilation is needed for these to dry up.
During application and drying of epoxy floor paints, clean the floor with a hard bristled brush and sweep away the debris, then scrub warm soapy water on the concrete floor and sweep it away also. Get a degreaser and scrub it all over the floor so all the soluble contaminants can be rinsed with water. You can check is your epoxy garage surface clean by spraying some water to see will it stick on the flooring. you will then have to leave your coating to dry until the next day. Then simply apply the first layer of paint the next day. Two to three coats are adequate for a good finish. To get rid of those spills and paint drips, you need to have a clean rag made of cotton near you, as well as some epoxy thinner that will clean solvent based paints well.
I love this paint and go for it because it has a clean finish, is resistant to acid and salts, while it is durable and tough in the long run. Before you allow any traffic on the surface, you will have to wait for some time for these to mature, since the proper preparation and application is needed.

The Strenghts Of Insulating Patio Curtains
August 21st, 2009 Posted 6:12 pm
A great way to reduce energy consumption and warm up your home is to use insulating curtains. A large number of options guarantee that you will find something suitable for your home. Current insulated door drapes can be easily customized to suit your wishes. Some people don’t want neutral colors, so there are zillions of other choices.
You get a whole lot more from these draperies than from some simply made covers that are hanged over your windows. There are many of colors and designs you can choose from: valance, pinch pleat, solid, courtyard, patterns and so on. It’s best to use insulated door curtains during the winter only and use lighter draperies when the temperature rises.
You will prolong the life of all your window treatments if you alternate them a bit. In case you decide to have the same discount curtains for the entire year, you will see them fade and lose their shine quickly. Only few decorative elements are able to change the atmosphere in your home so quickly, and drapes are one of them. They can also be made to look like regular unlined curtains. Another option is to find an online store and order the type you want to see in your home. You can find a lot of ideas for the drapes there.
Insulated patio door drapes serve two purposes, they keep cold air out and they also offer privacy the way a blind does. When you shut these drapes the lining keeps anyone outside from seeing inside. These drapes will also keep out some of the sun’s rays. They cannot entirely shut out the sun’s light but they do darken the room quite a bit, allowing you to get that much needed sleep.
Placing some lined curtains on patio doors will look quite good and will also provide you with some benefits. Once you see the ice on your doors and windows, you will be aware of the importance of insulation. You will see that you can cover wide areas with these drapes since they can be suspended with hooks or curtain rods. Since a lot of these can be found out there, you will have no problems with finding the one that you like. You need to buy a thicker one, so that it can insulate your home.
