Sanding,Staining and then Finishing are the three basic steps of Refinishing your hardwood floors. The rest of the article will teach you each of these steps.
The first thing you need to do is to sand your hardwood floor. Make sure though that you sweep the floor first to remove all dirt and debris. It is wise to remove nails or tacks before sanding. Utilizing a 20-grit sandpaper, start sanding around the corner of the room.
After sanding you have to decide if you want to stain your floor. If you think your floor does not need staining then you can go ahead to the finishing stage. If you decide to stain the floor then you need to vacuum or sweep the floor first. Then, apply some stain by brushing your floors. The stain will need some drying time of about five minutes or longer. If you think the floor needs a second coat you may apply another one using your brush.
And lastly, apply 3 to 4 coats of polyurethane. Whether you stain or not, you must seal the entire floor with a wool cover or a thick nap roller. Make sure that the first coat is dry before applying the second one,the drying interval of each coat application is three to six hours. The drying time actually varies according to the brand of polyurethane you will be using. Thus, it’s very important to know the type of polyurethane you will be applying to make sure of how long you will wait for floors to dry.

Eight Great Reasons To Select Area Rugs In Your Home
March 6th, 2010 Posted 8:29 pm
Area rugs are 1 of the home decor items that should not be overlooked. Area rugs originate from all over the world in ready-to-take-home standard configurations and dimensions. Area rugs will work in so many places with other flooring or where nothing else will work.
Area rugs are by definition a manufactured rug of a standard with a finished edge, as opposed to carpet yardage on a roll. Area rugs are not intended to be wall to wall carpet with padding underneath and tack strip around the edges. Wall to wall carpet is supposed to be stretched over padding and be more or less permanent. After you know the difference it is easier to pick a type of carpet for your house.
Here’s a list of nine reasons and uses for area rugs for you to consider:
One reason for choosing an area rug is that it is moveable. You can use it in a flat, then take it with when you move or change it from room to room as you change your decor.
Two would be the gigantic choice of color, design and style available in area rugs.
Three is that you can use area rugs on top of other floor coverings like ceramic or vinyl.
Four is the versatility of area rugs from entry rug to use on an out of doors patio, kitchen, toilet, and finally as a style statement in the living room.
Five is the simplicity of cleaning area rugs. You can take most outdoor area rugs and hose them off. Other area rugs can be sent out to a rug cleaner or have a rug shampooer used on them.
The 6th reason for purchasing an area rug is to warm up a floor like wood or ceramic tile.
Seven is a good one for many of us – area rugs can cover up worn spots on carpet or vinyl flooring and make a room look new again.
Eight: You can be more adventurous with an area rug because it is not permanent. You can pick bright colors or wild designs simply for the excitement of it, or you can choose an antique oriental rug to add richness to a room.
No matter where you opt to use an area rug, it’ll be a good choice. Area rugs allow you to add spots of color and pattern to any room, and if you get tired of them, you can roll them up to store or move them to another area.

March 6th, 2010 Posted 1:00 am
One of the most commonly used and abused part of our homes is probably our carpets. If you ponder on it, we always walk on it everyday. We get dirt on it through many different ways. We also get stains on our carpets in almost the same different varieties. So it is usually very easy to forget that a carpets cleanliness can be maintained if you know how to.
The first variety that carpets get dirt on is through the dirt that we bring that accumulates in us from the outside. The dirt that accumulates on our footwear is something that gets into our carpets very easily . So the main thing that we can do about it is to vacuum our carpets regularly. That is probably the easiest and best piece of advice that I can give clients of my carpet cleaning San Diego business. Because by vacuuming your carpets regularly you don’t give the dirt a chance to stain.
The next usual method that our carpets get soiled are from spill from our food or drinks. Though they seem harmless, these spills can cause stains. The bad part is if you let the stains stay for any length of time they will be hard to get rid of. The best way to get rid of these stains is to use good carpet cleaning supplies. The best advice is to treat it immediately.
Lastly, another common way that may cause our carpets to be dirty is through the pets that we own. Our pets may vomit or soil our carpet by causing accidents. Either of those accidents can soil our carpets horribly and may create a permanent stain in a short period of time. The best method to treat it is to treat it immediately after it happens. And once again you want to make sure to use a good product. That is the best advice I can give my customers of my San Diego carpet business to clean it immediately.
So those are but some of the ways our carpets get dirty quickly. The trick to making sure your carpet doesn’t stay dirty is to clean it right away.

Epoxy Paint For Garage Floor
November 13th, 2009 Posted 3:39 pm
Epoxy paints have been in the market for many years. They are used in the industrial floors because of their toughness, durability and resistance to oil and grease. But, of late homeowners too have been using them.
You’ll often find people using these for basement flooring and garage floors.Such an application helps to get rid of dull and gray concrete to provide an easy to maintain clean floor. Some of the benefits of epoxy floor paint include: Long lasting, rustproof, waterproof, heat resistant, salt and acid resistance, Nontoxic when dry and reduced maintenance costs. One major factor prompting its use for the householders is its low price. Keeping the technicalities’ in mind, you should not use concrete floor paint in case your floor has seepage or moisture, as such paints don’t last long under humid conditions.
Basically there are three types of epoxies: 100% solids, solvent-based and water-based. The strongest ones being the 100% solids and are the most expensive that need to be handled by experts only. For industrial applications solved based epoxies are the most common. They contain 40-60% solids. Ventilation is of prime importance if you decide to use epoxy paints for your garage or basement floor.
You have to go to industrial supply stores to find them. The cheapest type is the water-based epoxies. Because of their strength they are recommended for being used for residences. They are conveniently available at any home improvement store. You can have them in many colors.
Some manufacturers offer computerized color matching also.
Most of the brands in the market claim that epoxies are good for exterior purpose only. And, that is right for some of the stronger coatings. For some, living in unkind weather it may be worthwhile to explore the possibility of using acid based or acrylic concrete stains before zeroing in on the use of epoxy concrete paint.
The first step before you apply epoxy paint on your garage floor, is to prepare the floor. Most of the epoxy coating failures i have witnessed are as a result of wrong or little surface preparation. At the outset you have to clean the floor with a hard bristled brush and subsequently clear the debris created. Next, you should use a mild acid for scrubbing of floor for a thorough cleaning. This technique is also called as acid etching.
This is followed by Scrubbing the concrete floor with warm soapy water and clearing it away also. But you may remain with some water soluble contaminants which you may need to remove with the the help of a de-greaser by scrubbing it over the surface, then rinsing it with water. The mild acid does not remove grease and oils from the garage floors. It’s of utmost importance to check that rinsing water is not stuck on the garage floor, for if it remains there, you have to repeat the exercise once again.
After doing these, the garage floor should then be left overnight to dry. The epoxy floor coating applied should be of uniform consistency. You should also make sure that the humidity is at the accepted levels to prevent the coating from blistering and discoloring. Generally, two to three coats of paint deliver the required results.
If you do a proper install of epoxy paints, you a assured of years of service and if you maintain the surface regularly you can further its lifespan.

Remodelling your houses through the use of floorings
October 24th, 2009 Posted 12:19 pm
Everybody loves to do things to their house. Some people love to adorn it with decorations. Some people love to buy nice furnitures. Others like maybe a nice kitchen or bathroom. But the flooring is the most important part of the house that needs to be improved if people want to beautify their houses. The flooring is a big part in making our houses look beautiful. It makes sense because the size of our house is also the size of our flooring so it is easily noticed. So if you really have plans in reamking the look of your house then you should not overlook the flooring.
During times like these it is very hard for people to spend money on not so important things. Some choices have to be made for those people who have spare money for some home improvement. Of course running a carpet San Diego company my advice is to go with the flooring. If a person does not have enough money then overhauling the flooring is the cheapest and best option. It can remake the look of the house. And it can be for a lot less than the other options.
But there are of course a lot of people who are really in tough times. They might not even have enough money to buy new flooring. So the best thing they can do is to maintain the type of flooring that they have and clean it regularly. If the type of flooring they have are carpets then they should just regularly clean it to keep it looking new. Of course they have to make sure to use the best carpet cleaning supplies. If they choose to pick some cheap brands it could ruin the carpet.Or it can make the carpet look ugly.
But of course I would like them to replace their floorings. If a person can afford it there are so many choices. Someone doesn’t have to just go with carpeting. In my tile San Diego busines I offer my customers a lot of choices from hardwood floors to tiles. Depending on what look they want will help them make the decision. They can immediately make their homes beautiful once they have decided what type of flooring they want to use.

Ways to beautify your homes
October 24th, 2009 Posted 3:37 am
One of the things that people enjoy doing is improving the looks of their houses. It makes sense since people spend their quality and rest time in their houses with their beloved ones. And due to that fact, people get tired of their environment in their houses and want to change it.Some people remdoel their houses completely. Others do some things less extensive but still produces a different look. One of those things is changing out your flooring. This can do a lot in changing the look of your house.
My advice to most people I have gained running a San Diego tile business is to do your flooring.Especially if they don’t have enough money. In other words, they can’t afford a complete remodeling.Doing your flooring is the best thing you can do to your house because it provides a good return to your money. The reason for this is maybe because flooring runs through your whole house so its very noticeable. It can really change the look of your house by just changing your tiles or hardwood flooring. You can turn a boring room or house and make it look totally new by just changing the floors.
But most people right now, especially during recession times, don’t have the means to change their whole flooring. If they can’t afford it, I just tell them to regularly maintain their flooring by keeping it clean and taking care of it.If their house is carpeted then they should have it cleaned regularly. If they are really on a budget I suggest they buy some carpet cleaning supplies and do it themselves. But I make sure that they buy quality products so the cleaning can be noticeable.
But, of course, the best option is to change your flooring. This really provides the changed look people are looking for. It is a lot less costly compared to a remodel but still can produce a nice looking home. So when people come into my carpet San Diego business I give them that choice of carpet cleaning or replacing the flooring. If they can afford it, I always tell and suggest to them that they change or upgrade their floors. But if money is not that aplenty then cleaning the flooring will do at the moment.

Home Flooring -Information and Tips
October 2nd, 2009 Posted 4:34 pm
Finding just the right kind of flooring for your home is a very important process that deserves an investment of time and research. There is no single answer as to what kind of flooring is best, as each type caters to a unique need. Hardwood can help to establish a stately and beautiful appearance, while carpet allows a more relaxed atmosphere. Tile and stone flooring provides the home with a greater degree of durability in flooring. Deciding which kind of flooring is right for your home requires answering some simple questions
When children and pets are involved, a more rugged type of flooring may be in order for the home. While carpet provides a great surface that retains warmth and comfort, it sometimes is inadequate when children and pets are present. A laminate or tile surface provides greater resiliency when faced with these conditions. Carpet, although it provides warmth and comfort, also absorbs moisture and dirt. Without regular cleaning, carpet has a tendency to become very dirty. Carpet may also take on an odor after a while if it is not cleaned appropriately. With appropriate cleaning, however, carpet can be a great choice.
Should you settle on carpet, be sure to select one that has a deep pile. Deep pile carpets are tougher on stains and water damage, and resist stains more effectively. Carpet has the advantage of comfort over hardwood, which can be rough and cold. Hardwood is a stately and aesthetically pleasing option. Although not as diverse as carpet, hardwood can come in a range of species and shades. Maple and oak are more traditional, while cedar provides a rustic feeling that is great in some homes.
Moisture is a big problem for hardwoods, although some are designed specifically to provide greater protection against this. With a hardwood flooring, it is important to avoid frequent spills and excess moisture. Doing so will extend the life of the hardwood for many years, and prevent warping and buckling that can occur otherwise. Regular cleaning is an important part of hardwood maintenance, but harsh chemicals and excessive amounts of water should not be used. Professional cleaning services must typically be contracted to deal with cleaning carpets.
Tile and stone flooring is a great choice for garages or kitchens. Water, spills, and scuffing are not an issue with these tough surfaces.

September 15th, 2009 Posted 12:37 pm
You need to determine w hat type of floor you have, before you start with the cleaning. If you are lucky to have a new sealed floor, it is probably a surface sealed floor which requires relatively little care. If your floor is older, it is probably a penetrating seal treated floor. This type of floor needs more involved care with waxes and oils.
For cleaning hardwood floors, in the case of a surface sealed floor, you merely need to mop using a product recommended by your flooring manufacturer. Products like Oil Soap solution (which don’t generally contain oil) are usually safe. Use some soap and a damp mop on this type of floor and you will be safe. Make sure to dry the floor completely when you’re done, since sitting water can damage a surface sealed floor.
In case you have a penetrating seal floor in your home, you won’t be able to use water based products while mopping. But for routine cleanings, use a vacuum cleaner or a broom. You will have deep cleaned floors if you remove the old wax coating and apply new one every once in a while. You are free to do this task two times a year.
Manufacturers directions should be follower while using stripper here. Make sure you have a good ventilation so your hardwood floors can dry properly. Now you can buy some wax that can be applied on your wood floor and you are ready. Read the instructions so you can properly apply the number of coats you wish for.
And at last, we have an important step to do, to use a electric floor scrubber. You will have to use this process so that the wax can sink in properly and the floor can be sealed and shiny. There are plenty of people who who buy used floor buffers since they are cheap and help them finish their job with ease. I think it is very important to know that a new floor bufer machines you buy will pay itself off after you use it for several times.
