What Do I Do to Sell My Art?

Are you a closet Monet or Picasso that is just waiting for a moment to burst onto the art scene?Do you have a secret longing to have your art featured in a gallery or art show but have no idea how to sell your art?

There are many venues available to the new artist to where he or she can get exposure for his or her work.  Before you get ahead of yourself and start planning your first showing, you first need to set a little groundwork.

Ask yourself a few simple questions about your dreams of being a paid artist.  Do you have a unique artistic identity?  You may think of this as a brand, just like companies have branded themselves.  How is it that you wish for your audience to see you?You should have your own identity as an artist before you worry about how to sell art.

You should set specific goals if you want to be taken seriously as an artist and be paid for your work.  What do you hope to achieve with your art? Will art be a full time lifestyle for you, or is it merely a favorite pastime or hobby?You must consider and answer those questions first before you start researching how to sell your art.

Who will your potential buyers be? Where are they from, what is their age group and wealth status?  You may decide to start only locally, but regardless of this decision, you will likely wish to have a web presence in order to learn how to sell art online.

Don’t rely on the internet alone, however, as it can be very impersonal. It will also be a good idea to mingle with gallery owners and other artists if you plan to become a successful fulltime artist yourself.

It will take time, so be sure you have a great deal of patience. Art is unfortunately a difficult and competitive business.  You may even feel as if your earnings are not commensurate with the time and effort you’ve put into your work.  Nevertheless, if you are committed to your goal, don’t give up and be sure to give your artistic expression time to blossom.

Once you have completed the pre-planning, such as establishing your unique identity and setting goals, you can start promoting and learning how to sale your art.
