How do you sculpt miniatures?

How do you sculpt miniatures yourself, what do you need and how much do I need to pay for all the stuff to make some minis? Looking for alternative to GW Green Stuff ‘cos that’s £6 a pack and could probably do about half a model!

What is the best type of paint to use on metal miniatures?

I’m thinking about getting into the Warmachine tabletop strategy game. I believe the miniatures for that game are metallic. The most experience I’ve had painting minis was with plastic ones. Is there a particular type of paint that is better applied to metal figures than plastic ones?
