How do you make Pixel Dolls or piexel art in gimp? Tutorials?

I want to make some pixel dolls, like the ones where you get a base and you draw the rest. I want to know how to make them , i have gimp and paint. Is there a tutorial? Or is there someone who can tell me?
I need a basic tutorial.
