Collectible Spun Glass Figurines
Delightfully Delicate Collectible Spun Glass Figurines
There is nothing prettier, more delicate and sensually appealing than delicate spun glass
figurines. The way the light sparkles and refracts when it hits the ornament, or the way it
takes on an "other worldly" glow later in the day. Did you know that the unique process of
creating spun glass (glass blowing) actually begins with semi-liquid glass fired to high temperatures? If you ever have the chance to see this art in progress, stop and watch closely. It takes a real craftsman to do this very delicate kind of work.
Glass blowing using a tube didn't happen until about 27 BC to
AD 14, but records show making glass started even earlier – about the second century. And what is
glass? It's a composite of various minerals etc. that include (among other things) limestone,
sand, potash and soda. It's then heated to an astonishing 2000 degrees F. The bubbles make their way to the surface and the mass is cooled a bit to work with.
Glass blowing isn't a simple art by any stretch of the
imagination, and once you see what artisans have made, you will be astonished. Imagine something
so delicate being blown by mouth? Spun glass figurines are a very personal gift for those you
love who appreciate the fine art of such fragile and remarkable ornaments.
